For the young at heart there are horse trails in the mountains and game
viewing on horseback. Horse lovers, we breed Connemara ponies here, ponies
that come from the green hills of Ireland. Christine is a qualified riding
instructor who will teach you to enjoy your riding.
Visit the Boer war graves and the San paintings. Listen to the ground
woodpeckers and the francolins. Bring with: Riding clothes, Binoculars,
Mountain bikes, Hiking boots, Warm clothes and hats.
For the more adventurous there are walks on the high mountains of the
farm where one may see the black eagles and lammergeyers, watch the black
wildebeest and zebra play and photograph the blesbuck as they stream across
the mountains.
Schaapplaats is very family orientated - the farm has a variety of ducks,
geese, chickens, goats, cows, dogs, cats and horses just to mention a
few. Some hiking trails are gentle enough for the kids to enjoy and there
are rock pools for swimming in the summer.
The Twin Caves
The twin caves are linked caves overlooking a small stream on Schaapplaats
farm. The southernmost cave has Iron Age walling in it but this cave has
not yet been excavated. The northern cave was excavated by archaeologists
from the University of the Witwatersrand.
Below this modern deposit very old Modern Stone Age tools were found.
The African Middle Stone Age dates between 25 000 and 250 000 years ago
and the Twin Cave tools could date to anywhere during this period.
Water seeping through the cave has destroyed any evidence of bone or
charcoal that may once have been there. This means that it is not possible
to say anything about the animals that were eaten in the cave or about
the type of firewood that was brought to the site.
Twin Cave and Adullam Cave provide evidence that humans repeatedly occupied
the Clarens area for hundreds of thousands of years. In the past it was
undoubtedly as attractive for habitation as it is today.
