Addo Dungbeetle River Lodge is your entry point to the world
famous Addo Elephant National Park located just outside Port Elizabeth
as well as some of the finest game reserves in the Eastern Cape
province of South Africa.
With the Sundays River flowing at the foot of the lodge, sweeping
river views from the lodge's decks offer a perfect backdrop to an
all South African experience of big five game viewing, river activities
including safe swimming, canoes or a river cruise.
Opposite the lodge is the famous Alexandria dune field : a hikers
paradise of interesting facts, history, geology, flora and fauna.
Watch the sun go down over the river and dune fields from the beach
at the river mouth.

Addo South Gate / Colchester where Dungbeetle River Lodge is situated
is only 3 minutes away from the Addo Elephant National Park southern entrance
and 30 minutes away from the Port Elizabeth Airport on the N2.
Dungbeetle River Lodge Accommodation
Dungbeetle River Lodge is a graded 4-Star and has 6 air-conditioned en-suite
rooms tastefully decorated in a unique African safari theme that lends
a feeling of warmth and character to your stay.
All the rooms are en-suite, air-conditioned and include the conveniences
you expect from 4-star accommodation.
The Fish Eagle Room is the perfect destination for a romantic weekend
away.
This suite with its four-poster bed and large bath tub open onto a wooden
balcony with panoramic views of the Sundays River.

Lounging on the Deck
An expansive deck overlooking the river and sand dunes is an ideal way
to relax and take in the beauty of Dungbeetle River Lodge’s tranquil
setting.
Dinner Arrangements
Braai facilities and pizza facilities (for large groups only) available
by prior arrangement. Meals can be enjoyed at a small restaurant within
200m of the lodge.
Scrumptious Breakfast
Your stay is inclusive of a scrumptious full farm breakfast that includes
home-baked bread, piping hot muffins and fresh fruit juice.
Activities
- Full day tours into Addo Elephant National Park (Big 5) with qualified
game guides).
- Hiking over the famous Alexandria Dune Fields.
- Elephant Back Riding. Be in the company of 4 young elephants. They have
been trained on the reward system: when they carry out an instruction
well, they are rewarded with food.
Interact with them yourself by riding them and feeding them, then you
watch their trainer put them through their paces. Enjoy these intelligent
animals. Only half an hour away from the lodge on excellent roads.
- Afternoon and evening safaris on private game reserves. Lion sightings
almost guaranteed!
- Ferry rides on the Sundays River.
- Canoeing & Birding.
Sundays River
With its source deep in the mountains of the Karoo, the Sundays River
is navigable for over 24km. Dungbeetle River Lodge has its own jetty for
fishing and boating enthusiasts. The lodge has several canoes for your
enjoyment. A boat port is available, for those people who have their own
boat.
Bicycles are made available, for those who enjoy the outdoors. Over 200
bird species have been identified in this area, and trips up the river
can be arranged for twitchers.
Coastal Dune Fields
Dungbeetle River Lodge is situated alongside the largest coastal sand
dune field in the southern hemisphere. Formed almost 65 000 years ago,
the Woody Cape / Alexandria Dune fields cover the 3km between Dungbeetle
River Lodge and the Indian Ocean. The seemingly endless and beautiful
dunes make for excellent hiking to the sea.
How To Get To Dungbeetle River Lodge
From Port Elizabeth
Travel on the N2 in the direction of Grahamstown for about 40 kms. Pass
Bluewater Bay, the Coega Harbour Development and over the Sundays River
Bridge.
Look out for Colchester / Cannonville turnoff. Take this road to the right.
Turn right at the T junction, over speed bump and first turning left.
Into Aquavista Crescent, 5th Building to left. Clearly identifiable.
From Cookhouse / Cradock
Travel on the N10 in the direction of Port Elizabeth, over the Nanaga
interchange, follow Port Elizabeth sign boards.
The road is now the N2.
Approximately 16km further, the river and sand dunes will clearly be visible
on the left hand side of the road, pass the B.P. garage and take the Colchester
/ Cannonville turn off to the left.
Turn right at the T junction, over speed bump and first turning left,
into Aquavista Crescent, 5th building to left. Clearly identifiable.
From East London / Grahamstown
Travel 90 kms on the N2 from Grahamstown, over the Nanage interchange,
follow Port Elizabeth sign boards. Look out for the river and sand dunes,
clearly visible on the left hand side of the road, pass the B.P. garage
and take the Colchester / Cannonville turnoff to the left.
Turn right at the T junction, over speed bump and first turning left,
into Aquavista crescent. 5th Building to left. Clearly identifiable.
From Graaff Reinet
Travel on the R75 towards Port Elizabeth. By pass Uitenhage. Take the
N2 motorway and follow Grahamstown signage. Approximately 40 km further,
having passed Bluewater Bay, the Coega Harbour Development and over the
Sundays River Bridge, the signboard Colchester / Cannonville will be your
turnoff to the Right.
Turn right at the T junction, over the speed bump and the first turning
left, into Aquavista Crescent. 5th building to the left clearly identifiable.
