History of Petworth Place:
As a tribute to my mother, who has played an incredibly important
role in my life, I decided to name Petworth Place after the home in which
her family originated.
Sometime in the late 1700's a baby boy was born to a Miss Upperton, a
chambermaid in the household of George Wyndham, whose title was Lord Leconsfield,
3rd Earl of Egremont. The baby was the illegitimate son of the Earl. He
was christened George Upperton and was my great-great grandfather.
The boy was never acknowledged as the son of the Earl, but he grew up
in his father's household at Petworth House in Sussex, England.
According to my mother's research, The Wyndhams were very wealthy landowners
and at one stage owned more than 100,000 acres of land across the United
Kingdom.
Petworth House was the family's primary residence and was served by an
army of staff. In the 1890's apart from the 50 odd members of staff in
the house, there were 24 men employed in the stables, 25 gardeners, and
many more working on the estate, including a team of upholsterers.
General note:
Every room has a wall heater, fan, television, wall-safe, fridge, kettle
and hospitality tray, access to WIFI, desk, top quality beds and bed linen.
Petworth Place is a non-smoking house, but there are areas on the verandah
where smoking is permitted. Petworth Place is situated close to the city
centre, schools and Rhodes University.
