The Hopewell Story:
In the year 2000, Hopewell was a ranch supporting 500 head of cattle and
flocks of sheep. Yet it had not been extensively damaged by agricultural
practices and from the very first inspection by the owners its potential
as an ideal game reserve was evident due to its position in a ´conservation
belt´.
The estate was purchased in 2001 by Chris and Sharon Oliver, in partnership
with Bruce and Cate Little and their families, they became the new eco-pioneers
on the land. The initial challenge was to remove all forms of conventional
agriculture which included, internal fences, Cattle handling facilities
and all unnecessary structures.
Simultaneously thirty kilometres of game fencing was erected around the
entire perimeter of the property. A feasibility study was undertaken to
identify and source suitable indigenous animals that would restore balance
and diversity to the eco-system.
Species that have been re-introduced since 2002 include elephant, rhino,
hippo, cheetah, giraffe, eland, waterbuck, burchells zebra, kudu, bontebok,
hartebeest and mountain reedbuck. Birdlife is thriving with several resident
species, like the majestic crowned eagle, returning to breed after years
of absence from the property. Small predators include the graceful Caracal
(African lynx), nocturnal Serval cat, Honey badgers, and Black backed
jackals.
Hopewell has brought the spirit of the wild back, restoring farmland to
wilderness for the benefit of the natural environment, the wildlife and
local community. Today the indigenous plants and animals flourish, bringing
a restored sense of peace.
The Hopewell Story is one of dedication, to the restoration and conservation
of the environment , a commitment to the local community, and a vision
for the future for the greater good of all. The result is a private environment
filled with an astonishing array of birds, where the antelope graze and
the black-and-white blur of zebras mingle in the bush. It is a peaceful
hide-away to enjoy in privacy.
A place to refocus vision, re tune hearing and revitalise the soul.
