Policies Suitability Activities, Adventure, Attractions... Ladismith Winery was founded in 1939 when 73 wine grape farmers came together to establish the distillery, as it was called. In the beginning, distilling wine had been kept on the farms till the fermentation process was finished. This was done in cement tubs and then taken to the cellar where the wine was distilled and sold to the KWV in the form of spirits. Today the cellar is divided in a distillery and winery. Our wines are being market under the name of Towerkop. Architectural Heritage Assegaay Bosch Game Drives The Cango Caves Meerkatmagic Gamka Mountain Nature Reserve The Reserve was established in 1974 in order to conserve a local population of endangered Cape mountain zebra and their natural habitat. The terrain is rugged, with mountainous plateaux consist of table Mountain quartzites and shales, and Bokkeveld sandstone and shales. Scenic Drive Drive on to the former mission stations, Zoar and Amalienstein, before turning into Seweweekspoort where spectacular rock formations are to be seen as the road follows the riverbed for 21 km threw the mountains emerging in the Groot Karoo. Travelling west of Ladismith one can visit Dwarsrivier , Voorbaat and van Zylsdamme picturesque valleys with orchards, vineyard and old farm houses. Turn left at Winkelplaas and follow the road to Vensterkraans to see the awesome damage infliction by the great Laingsburg floods in 1981 on the rail bridge of the Groot River. Ladismith History The Dutch Reformed congregation was founded in 1851 an the town was established in 1852 on a section of a farm Ylandsvalley donated by Balthazer Klopper, named after Lady Juana Smith, the original Ladysmith was changed in 1879 to LADISMITH to prevent confusion to its namesake in NATAL. It serves an extensive farming area with ideal climate for the production of quality fruits - Apricot, Peaces, Plums, Nectarines and Grapes. With two cheese factories and a winery. Ladismtih, as with the Klein Karoo benefited from the ostrich feather
