Activities
Birding

The Waterberg area has a wondrous variety of bird species, with almost half of South Africa’s bird diversity occurring in the region. With low human habitation, natural habitats, many wetlands and other water based habitats this is a great place for birds.

On the reserve we have been recording our bird species since 2004. Since then we have build up a bird list of 200+ species in just 700ha. The terrain has many habitats which makes it attractive for different types of birds. We have a savanna grass plain, bushveld habitats, rocky cliffs, two koppies, the running Tamboti river and a dam which holds around 4 ha. of surface water.

Great places to bird on the reserve are at and around the lodge overlooking the Tamboti river gorge and at the perfectly situated dam hide overlooking the dam. Besides that, we also have several other hides on the property along the walking trails from which you can do bird watching.

Some of our favorites on the reserve are the ‘Cheeky Mocking Cliff-Chat’ who believes the lodge belongs to them, the hard working ‘Red-headed Weavers’, the magnificent ‘Paradise Flycatchers’ and the always busy little ‘Crombecs’ and ‘Apalises’.

The Reserve
Flora and Fauna

The mountains of The Waterberg have an abundant and a spectacular array of wildlife from the very small to the very large. Our reserve is home to a vast number of birds, mammals, reptiles and insects, each with its very own importance in the ecosystem here. Take for instance the lowly termite who builds structures that rivals humans own engineering feats.

They create their very own air conditioning and recycle 30% of the annual dead biomass in savanna habitats, allowing all other life in the savanna to exist. Here is just a selection of some of the wonderful wildlife we have at Bushbuck Rock Valley.

Waterberg Area
The Waterberg is an escarpment of massive sandstone buttresses and outcrops, incorporating many rivers, streams and swamps, stretching for 150 km in a long arc from Thabazimbi in the West, past Nylstroom to Potgietersrus in the east.

The Waterberg Mountain Range encompasses 14,500 square km. which is the equivalent of eighty percent of the Kruger National Park. It has undulating plateau’s and is an area of magnificent landscape, with breath-taking scenery, pristine habitats, abundant bird and wildlife and has an unmatched rugged beauty.

The Waterberg Mountain Range surrounding is an immense storehouse of not only cultural but also archaeological and biological diversity. It is an astonishingly beautiful area that is well worth a visit for anyone who loves nature, history and cultural experiences.

Biodiversity is high on the agenda in the Waterberg.
