Lephalale Lephalale is a coal mining town and divided into three main subsections – Lephalale, Onverwacht and Marapong. As a malaria-free environment, the area is a popular holiday destination – especially considering the mild winters and moderate summer evenings. Situated in the Waterberg, close to the Botswana border, the breathtaking Savannah Biosphere constantly draws international visitors. Local Attractions The Waterberg Biosphere with its lush indigenous plants, Big Five game animals and hot springs present a peaceful atmosphere and a welcome escape from the busy city life. The nearby D’Nyala Nature Reserve welcomes visitors for hiking, and game and bird watching tours, and is popular for family picnics. With the coal mining industry as the foundation of this relatively small town, the Kumba Grootegeluk open-cast mine is the largest of its kind in South Africa. The town also hosts the world’s largest dry-cooled power station at the Matimba Power Station. Interesting self-drive routes around the town include the Waterberg Route (following the R33) towards the D’Nyala Reserve and the Waterberg Biosphere. The Mokolo Route (following the R33 and R510) leads to the Mokolo River and dam, game parks, the Waterberg Biosphere and Kudu Canyon. The Marula Route (following the R510) includes highlights like the Marakele National Park, the Matimba Power Station and Kumba Grootegeluk Mine. The Limpopo Route (following the R572) offers beautiful Baobab Trees, bird watching and the Limpopo River passing four border posts. The Heritage Route (following the R561 and R518) includes visits to unique rural villages and cultural experiences, Museums in Melkrivier, Big Five game and the Mama Tau White Lions.
