Sights - Historical Route Middelburg
ENGLISH BRIDGE
This bridge was built by the British to get to their garrison. The bridge
is still in a good condition.
OLD CEMENTARY AND BLOCKHOUSE
Here you will find a blockhouse that is in a fairly good condition. Also
notice the two graves of Henry Slegtkamp and Jack Hindon. These two were
key roll players during the Boer war.
NATIONAL MONUMENT
This monument was erected after the war to commemorate those that fought
and died during the Anglo Boer War.
CONCENTRATION CAMP CEMETERY
This graveyard came to being when the concentration camp moved there.
922 children died in the Middelburg area during 1899-1901. In the Boer
woman’s diaries they write of the black concentration camps. Notice
the pile of rocks lying north of the graves.
That is a black cemetery and is known to be the only black graveyard
in South Africa that is within walking distance from a white one. There
are only three known black cemeteries in South Africa.
OLD CANON BLOCKHOUSE
When driving +/- 1km on the Stoffberg road, you will see a beacon on the
left-hand side of the road. Notice that the beacon is situated on top
of an old blockhouse that has been filled with rocks. Legend has it that
a canon was inside it and “watched” over the town.
THE “EYE”
This vanished structure used to be a light tower, used to look over the
camps. The children, who played around there, called the structure The
Big Eye.
MEIJERSBRIDGE (1896)
This historical bridge used to be the only crossing over the little Olifants
River. Cattle auctions normally took place here. From the bridge the road
split into two, one towards Groblersdal and one towards Belfast.
THE OLD CHURCH
Directly after the war, women decided to erect a church in memory of the
women and children who were held in concentration camps. This building
was used in the earlier days as a hospital. The church is now being maintained
by the Technical High School and is still being used for services by the
school.
DRIFT
If you look very carefully on the corner of Luttig and Vos streets, you
will see that the park has a distinctive drift running through it. This
is the path where the woman walked from the station to the concentration
camp.
NEW CEMETERY
When you go to the old part of the cemetery, you will notice that there
are many graves of children, women and old men who died during the war.
The reason for this being that there was a concentration camp right next
to the cemetery. Also notice the amount of people who died in various
concentration camps nationwide listed on a monument nearby.
CANAL
Driving along Robertson Street you have to look very carefully to notice
the canal running along the road. This canal was used to get water form
Rietfontein to Kruger Dam. This was efficient to supply the town with
water up until 1967.
ENGLISH BRIDGE
As you enter the Middelburg Country Club you will drive over a very old
bridge. If one looks closely one notice that this bridge looks much the
same as our first stop. The reason for this is that it was build at the
same time as the first one, by the same people. The only difference is
that this one has two arches, instead of only one.
TREE LANE
On the corner of McDonald Street and Hospital Street is a park. If you
look at the trees it is fairly obvious that they are over 100 years old.
Notice that the trees are situated in a fairly strait line. This was the
lane, which led to the English Garrison. It is uncertain what the purpose
of the two structures nearby was.
WHITE CHURCH
Proclaimed a historical monument, this is a true landmark of Middelburg
due to its size and architectural design. British soldiers used it during
the second Anglo Boer War, which explains why it did not get damaged like
so many other churches during that time.
OLD MIDDELBURG RAILWAY STATION (1890
)On 17 May 1884 Paul Kruger and portugal entered into an agreement to
develop a railway line between Pretoria and Delgoa Bay (now Maputo). Although
the station was in use since 1890, it was only completed in 1894.
BOTSHABELO HISTORICAL VILLAGE(Place of shelter)
The Botshabelo museumTypical 19th Century self-sustaining mission village.
On 21 January 1865 Alexander Merensky and Heinrich Grutzner two missionaries
from Berlin Mission Society bought a farm approximately 12km north of
Middelburg for the sum of 500 Prussian talers (R150).
The village originally had two schools, a training center, and numerous
missionary houses, trade centers, a blacksmith’s shop and a printing
shop where Bibles were first published in Sotho. Botshabelo was largely
self-sufficient, expanded rapidly and in 1873 there were 1315 inhabitants.
Church and Parsonage
The old Church (1865) and the second church (1868-1873) When the smaller
pioneer style church was no longer adequate, a bigger church was built
in 1868. A total of 300 00 bricks were made locally and the church was
completed in March 1868.
The church was later extended into a cross formation which can still
be seen. On completion the church was opened in October 1871. A brick
house was erected next to the church as a parsonage.
Fort Merensky
This restored fort with a commanding view of the whole area,
protected the mission station for free quarters of the century and its
dominating presence deterred invaders. Along the Fort’s ridge are
many ruins of old houses once occupied by pioneers and guards at Botshabelo.
The fort was a unique blend of Western and Sotho architecture.
Ndebele Open Air Museum
The South Ndeblele Open-Air Museum at Botshabelo depicts the cultural
characteristics and features of the Ndebele and includes traditional activities
such as beadwork, their richly coloured clothing and painted huts, can
still be seen here in practice.
