After all, this part of the Western Cape is renowned for its fabulous climate. Montagu Montagu has a number of the finest Cape Dutch houses. Most of these thatched roof houses date from the years 1853 and 1870. It is generally accepted that Joubert House situated in Long Street, built in 1853, is the oldest house in Montagu. In 1983 it was restored to its former glory, and as a section of the Montagu Museum, it depicts the lifestyle of the late 19th century. Montagu, once known as Agter Cogmanâs Kloof, lies between the Keisie and Kingna rivers which join at the western extremity of the town. In the 19th century the only exit to the West was through Cogmanâs Kloof. Now Montagu in the heart of Route 62 attracts many visitors who enjoy the scenery and buildings of a bygone era. In Montagu there is a variety of superb overnight accommodation and excellent restaurants. As the mountain Mecca of the Western Cape, Montagu is the perfect base for exploring the surrounding countryside. Activities: Musems Old Mission church - The old neo-gothic Mission Church dates back to 1907 and displays a collection of valuable furniture, paintings and objects d'art from Montagu. Herbal remedies and herbal products are also on sale here. Hot Mineral Springs - Montagu's springs' healing powers have enjoyed renown for over 200 years. The water is pumped continuously from the eye of the spring. An open-ended flow system through the complex ensures that all the system's water is constantly replenished. Open for day-visitors every day. Famous Tractor ride - Starting at Niel Burger's Protea Farm (30 kilometres from Montagu on the road to Touws Rivier), a tractor ride goes to the Langeberg mountain tops. Spectacular views! The trip takes 3 hours and at the end, one can indulge in a traditional "Potjiekos" meal. The tractor rides are very popular and advanced booking is absolutely necessary. Sports Route 62 Route 62 is the traveller's route, which meanders between Cape Town, Oudtshoorn, the Garden Route and Port Elizabeth, offering a scenic alternative to the N2 highway. Prompting associations with the legendary by-way, Route 66, in the USA which connected the urban and rural communities between Chicago and Los Angeles, Route 62 links Cape Town to Port Elizabeth. After being in hibernation for 40 years, this scenic route is now being revived and offers travelers a kaleidoscope of experiences, as it passes through the fruit growing and wine producing towns of Barrydale, Montagu, Ashton, Bonnievale, Robertson, McGregor, Worcester, Ceres, Wolseley, Tulbagh, Paarl and Wellington. Route 62 includes the wine cellars and estates of the Paarl, Wellington, Tulbagh, Worcester, Robertson and Klein Karoo Wine Routes, making this the longest wine route in the world! All who have traveled here agree that few places in the world are as stunningly beautiful as the scenic Route 62, so head out and embark on a unique adventure, one that's sure to tantalize your tastebuds.
