With crystal clear air, beautiful mountains, a superb climate and plenty to do, it is the ideal breakaway spot from city living.

Summer is warm and dry with carefree days and plenty of fruit to eat. Autumn brings a kaleidoscope of stunning colours and in winter the days are mild and sunny with the occasional rainfall.

Outdoor and adventure
The "Mountain Mecca" of the Western Cape offers various activities - some of the best rock-climbing in the world, mountain biking, 4x4-ing, hiking, kloofing and gravity biking to name a few.

The Montagu Tractor Trips to the summit of the Langeberg Mountains is a must, with spectacular views of the surrounding valleys and the optional potjie lunch afterwards is a culinary delight.

The famous hot springs, close to Rainbow Glen, are perfect for relaxing and there are also numerous sporting activities on offer in the area (such as fishing, golfing, tennis, bowls, squash and pistol shooting) as well as the Big Five - situated a mere 42km out of town.

Art, wine and history
The many award-winning wines from Montagu are well known throughout the world for their sugary sweetness and balmy bouquet. There is a wonderful arts and crafts route which winds through Montagu, showcasing the talents of the town residents. There are many historical monuments on Long Street and wide range of architecture with speaks much of Montagu's rich history.

Day trips into the areas surrounding Montagu can be enjoyed and this shows the diverse plant growth which is indigenous to the Klein Karoo.

The heart of Route 62
Route 62 is the tourist route that meanders between Cape Town and Oudtshoorn, the Garden Route and Port Elizabeth, offering the shorter, scenic alternative to the N2 highway. The 5 towns of Montagu, McGregor, Ashton, Robertson and Bonnievale make up The Heart of Route 62.

It is an area of magnificent landscapes and towering cliffs, crystal clear streams and an abundance of fauna and flora. The everchanging colours of the majestic mountains, scenic passes, rivers, vineyards and orchards makes this route an unforgettable adventure.

Interesting facts
The village was named after John Montagu, appointed as Colonial Secretary of the Cape in 1842. An exceptionally able and conscientious young man, he had the intelligence and imagination to envisage the potential of the Cape Colony. To unlock the hinterland, he built a road across the sandy Cape Flats and, using pioneering road engineers, convict labour and expert stone masons, built passes through the mountains.

In the 19th century the only entrance with through Cogmanskloof and during the passage through the kloof, the river had to be forded eight times. The first erven were sold in 1851 and the Dutch Reformed congregation was established in 1854. The tunnel was completed in 1877 and a decent road soon followed.

Joubert House, built in 1851, is believed to be the oldest dwelling in Montagu and depicts the lifestyle of the 19th century. The outbuilding of Joubert House was supposedly the first prison in Montagu. The Montagu Hotel was built in 1875 and was the first hotel in town. Mimosa Lodge started as a simple, single story farmhouse with a thatched roof and was later converted into a double storey house which provided the only other lodgings apart from the hotel. In its time it has served as a school boarding house, and old age home and a brothel - all summarised in lodging!

The date of the discovery of the hot springs cannot be determined as they had been used by the native inhabitants for healing for thousands of years. But in the time of the pioneers, one had injured his hand and due to regular bathing in the waters it healed miraculously. The word soon spread and the springs were then, as now, visited for health and relaxation reasons.
