Bourkes Luck Potholes
At the meeting place of the Blyde and Treur Rivers in Mpumalanga is a

Mac Mac Falls
When gold was discovered along the Mac-Mac River in 1874, a gold rush
followed. Many of the gold miners were Scottish, hence why the camp was
named Mac-Mac. In an attempt to divert the river, the miners placed dynamite
on the crest of the Mac-Mac Falls. The explosion split the 64-metre-high
waterfall into two streams which plunge into the forested gorge below.
Pilgrim´s Rest
The historical town of Pilgrim´s Rest was declared a living museum
in the 1970´s to preserve the history of gold mining in the Mpumalanga
Lowveld. The gold fields date back to ancient times when unknown miners
worked the quartz reefs for gold. A number of insignificant gold deposits
were discovered in the northern parts of South Africa between 1840 and
1870.
The first, small gold rush in South Africa took place in 1874 when payable
gold was discovered on the farm Geelhoutboom near the town of Sabie on
the Mpumalanga escarpment.
