Deeply involved in the Anglo-Boer War, Newcastle today is the largest town in northern KwaZulu-Natal. It is awash with history and some fairly original ways to spend one’s time.
The town is worth a visit for the battle sites just outside of town, which include Laing’s Nek, Majuba which also offers braai and picnic facilities and Schuinshoogte.
Chelmsford Nature Reserve
The Ntshingwayo Dam on the Ngagane River has created a beautiful sanctuary
for a large number of waterfowl, including Egyptian Geese, Flamingos and
assorted ducks. It has also become a wonderful playground for power boating,
anglers and other watersport enthusiasts and provides the ideal spot for
picnics.
The surrounding grasslands and acacia veld is the playground of several large game, including rhino, wildebeest, hartebeest, springbok and blesbok. The dam has a prolific birdlife with over 200 species being recorded in the area.
Fort Amiel
Situated in Newcastle, it was built in 1876 by Major Charles Frederick
Amiel and a force of two hundred men from the 80th Staffordshire Volunteers.
Today the fort houses the Newcastle Cultural Museum which has a variety
of Military displays with the focus being on the two Anglo-Boer Wars.
It also features a period room, which illustrates the career of old time Newcastle resident Sir Rider Haggard, author of King Solomon's Mines.
