Amakhala is named after the Xhosa word meaning Aloes, the prolific indigenous plant found in this uniquely diverse province.
Situated at the end of the Garden route, this 7500ha reserve offers malaria free game viewing.
Steeped in history and beauty, this 7500-hectare game reserve creates an ideal environment for an unforgettable safari.
The game reserve offers an intimate experience of the varied landscape, including breathtaking views of the Bushman's River.

Amakhala Game Reserve Accommodation

We offer owner-managed establishments that ensure first-hand famous hospitality of the Eastern Cape.
The Aloe Collection’s varying styles of 3 and 4 star accommodations, includes a Historic Inn, a Settler farmhouse and comfortable tented lodges.
The Heritage Collection lodges offer offers 4 and 5 star accommodation in luxury bush lodges and a gracious colonial homestead.

To maintain our hospitality and exclusivity we have limited the number of guests visiting the lodges to the amount of land which each family has contributed to the reserve.

THE ALOE COLLECTION

Quartermains Camp
This intimate camp offers guests the opportunity to experience “Africa under canvas”, with crisp white 1900’s style safari tents fitted out with military campaign style furnishings; the choice of pioneers, hunters and explorers of that time.
This classic 1920’s style expedition camp is modelled on the heyday of exploration, that golden era when adventure lay around every corner.
Reed Valley Inn
Set in the historic farmyard, the country rooms once provided the old ‘mail wagon travellers’ a restful and safe haven whilst travelling the country.
Each stylish room includes all comforts with separate entrance onto private patios and we serve hearty breakfasts, delicious lunches and dinners.
There are daily game drives, a convivial pub and children 12 and over welcome.
Woodbury Tented Camp
Set in the heart of Amakhala Game Reserve, overlooking the majestic plains where zebra and wildebeest roam. Tranquil surroundings and comfortable canvas tents allow guests to experience the bush at its best.
Carnarvon Dale
Guests are accommodated in either the elegantly restored Edwardian cottage or in the historic Settler farmhouse. There is a choice of en-suite and serviced bedrooms with private lounges.
Farm-style meals are usually taken in the main dining room, morning and late afternoon safari-style game drives across the Reserve are arranged to suit our guests personal needs.
Children over the age of 6 are welcome.

THE HERITAGE COLLECTION

Leeuwenbosch Country House
Leeuwenbosch is comfortable and spacious and it offers en-suite bedrooms and a suite. It has a lovely garden and was built in 1908.
Shearer's Lodge, set in the grounds of Leeuwenbosch, was originally built in 1930 and used for shearing and classing wool and has been converted into 4 luxury en-suite bedrooms.
There is a private lounge, all the rooms are open on to a wide colonial verandah, overlooking indigenous gardens, rolling lawns and the quaintly charming Leeuwenbosch Chapel.
We also have children's programme's whilst the adults can spend cheerful evenings in the old 1832 cellar pub where they can unwind and make friends.
Bush Lodge
Situated in the bush, at the top end of an open valley in the reserve, Bush Lodge's luxury tents, overlook a watering point with big sky views.
Each suite has a secluded private viewing deck with intimate plunge pool, a spacious interior hot and cold air conditioning, an atmospheric fire place, large oval bath and romantic alfresco double showers.
There is a spa for our guests to indulge in pampering and relaxing, children aged 12 and above are welcome.
Safari Lodge
African tribal design has inspired the creation of this intimate thatched lodge and its unique safari huts, which offer all of the creature comforts of a graded 5 star lodge.
The lodge is hidden secretly up a kloof in the indigenous Valley Bushveld, guests can soak in a luxurious double bath or splash off the dust in an outdoor shower before sharing their day's adventures around the fireside under a canopy of stars.
Children aged 9 and above are welcome.
