Attractions / Activities At and Nearby To Mosate Lodge
Pietersburg Game Reserve is located outside Polokwane
and houses more than 23 species of game on the 3 200 hectare reserve,
set in an unspoilt bushveld environment.
The Rhino Hiking Trail is a strong attraction for nature
lovers and campers frequently return to the site bordering the reserve.
Pietersburg Bird & Reptile Sanctuary is situated
just outside the city, on the R521 and is home to more than 280 species
of birds.
The Moletzie Bird Sanctuary protects rare birds like
the Cape Vulture and the Modjadji Rainforest holds the largest concentration
of indigenous cycads in the world. Cheune Crocodile Farm, Agatha Crocodile
Farm, and The Ranch Lion Park provide popular family outings.
Light Entertainment and Leisure Activities
Meropa Casino & Entertainment World, Savannah Mall, the New
Mall of the North, Polokwane Golf Course and even SA Breweries will ensure
pleasurable moments. The surrounding area also offers plenty opportunity
for 4x4 trips, hiking, mountain biking, horse riding, fishing and hunting.
On a cultural level, Polokwane offers carefully preserved archaeological
and historical sites in the Makapan’s Valley, where the sediments,
fossils, bones and artefacts found in the caves reveal a unique record
of hominid habitation and evolution dating back 3.3 million years.
For those who appreciate our rich history, the Eersteling Monuments marks
the country’s first gold crushing site and its first gold power
plant. The Anglo Platinum Smelters is well worth a visit.
A glimpse of the town’s first five years is offered by 23 000 glass
negatives in the Hugh Exton Photographic Museum. The Irish House Museum
(also known as the Green House Museum or more correctly, the Polokwane
Cultural History Museum) has interesting displays on the Limpopo cultural
groups and a taste of the traditional and modern-day culture and lifestyle
of the Bakone people can be enjoyed at the Bakone Malapa Northern Sotho
Open-Air Museum.
The victims of the nearby Anglo-Boer War concentration camp are memorialized
at the Concentration Camp Cemetery.
Apart from the widely available local arts and crafts, Polokwane presents
an extensive art collection in the city’s art gallery and boasts
more public sculptures per capita in its public parks than anywhere else
in the country.
