Rorke’s Drift Lodge, tucked up against the Sinqindi Mountain in kwaZulu-Natal, has before it a breathtaking expanse of Zululand that visitor’s to South Africa will not easily experience anywhere else. The Lodge is a tastefully converted farm house that resides in an expansive 5 hectare garden with rolling lawns on a 1000 acre property.

In an effort to fully explore our Mantra of EAT WELL, SLEEP WELL, we subscribe to and drive the concept of the word GUEST. The Oxford Dictionary offers us the explanation of Guest as being someone invited to visit. In keeping with this invitation, we have developed our facilities at the Lodge so that our visitors will truly feel that they were invited.

Rorke's Drift Lodge

We acknowledge that today, as travellers become more seasoned, we should offer much more than just a bed and a meal – we therefore have developed Rorke’s Drift Lodge as an experience – a heavenly experience.

With this in mind, guests at Rorke’s Drift Lodge will find that the Main Building of the Lodge houses the cozy and tastefully decorated Guest’s lounge complete with fireplace and DSTV (cable television), the Dining Room and kitchens, and the reception area with a small curio shop. A multi-level deck area is located in front of the Lodge and guests can choose to simply lounge comfortably on one of the levels or to take a swim in the plunge pool while enjoying the spectacular view in the distance. Visitors to Rorke’s Drift Lodge are assured of an intimate experience laced with tons of personal interaction with the friendly and efficient staff.

In the kitchens of the Lodge we brew up tasty treats on a daily basis. Cuisine with a South African flavour is our speciality. We serve hot and cold breakfasts accompanied by homemade breads and we also pack delicious picnic lunches for guests on tour. At evening meals, we have a set menu of three carefully selected courses and our Chefs will gladly cater to specific dietary requirements if necessary. On selected evenings, our Management will join guests for dinner.

Rorke's Drift Lodge Accommodation

Each of our rooms has been tastefully furnished with discerning guests in mind. The comfortable beds are dressed in percale linen and each bed has an electric blanket for the chilly nights. Lots of pillows and a throw on each bed completes the picture. The very spacious bathrooms are tiled and the guest amenities include soap, shampoo, hand/body lotion and shower caps. We have also included a shoe cleaning kit for the muddy days. Our snag proof towels are large and fluffy and are changed on demand. To complete the comfort, we have hairdryers and trays with tea and coffee in each room. Our essentials include sufficient cupboard space for clothing and there is a safe in each room. Ceiling fans have been installed for the warmer days and we have also dressed the floors with carpets made by local weavers at the ELC Art and Craft Centre in Rorke’s Drift.

Kutatu, (number three in Zulu) is our smallest room and is located near the entrance to the Lodge. This twin bedded room has a view of our gardens and is our least private room. We recently tweaked the decor in this room and it now has luxurious curtains that can block out light when necessary adding to the privacy and comfort of our guests.

Kune (number four in Zulu) is also housed in the Main Lodge building and is a family suite. The entrance to the suite leads onto a small lounge with a fireplace and comfortable couch that can be converted into an extra bed if needs be. Off this room is a twin bed room, most suited for families travelling together. There is a door between this room and the rest of the suite. The spacious and sunny Main Bedroom has a view of the gardens of the Lodge and it has two single beds along with a door that can close off from the rest of the suite. The bathroom has a splendidly spacious shower and the toilet is in its own separate room affording guests as much comfort as possible.

Kubili (number two in Zulu) is one of the first rooms to have been prepared for our guests. This room is housed in what originally was a water reservoir for cooling the power plant in the good old days. Now it has a wonderful wooden deck that is practically nestled in the branches of a gigantic indigenous fig tree and many a guest has been surprised by the Spotted Eagle Owl that sometimes hangs about in its branches at night. Needless to say, if the View is an important part of your holiday then this is the room to book. This is the only room with a double bed located on the top floor and there is a spiral staircase that takes you down onto the lower level where the bathroom, reminiscent of Roman Bathhouse proportions, can be found. The bathroom has a huge shower with a tiled seat that affords guests some added comfort.

Kuhlanu (number five in Zulu) is our prime suite and the most recently completed addition to the Lodge. Kuhlanu houses a twin bed room of spacious proportions, an inviting lounge that has a sleeper couch that sneakily folds out into a very comfortable double bed and a magnificently spacious bathroom that has two picture windows that frame the view in the distance perfectly, and, as with the rest of the Lodge, we have ensured that the shower affords the guest a very comfortable bathing experience. Then, to top off the experience, there is a small private deck area complete with lounging chairs for the guest to take in the view and savour the African experience.

Activities

Birds and Wildlife
The true magic of Rorke’s Drift Lodge really lies in the essence of Africa. We are essentially an African destination, and with that comes all the accoutrements of Africa. In our little bit of heaven we harbour many a resident who has, quite naturally, come to be a part of Rorke’s Drift Lodge.

In our gardens we have counted more than 120 different species of birds that at different times of the year can be found flitting from branch to branch. The Paradise Flycatcher, the Scarlet Chested Sunbird, the Groundscraper Thrush, and many more have made their home here. We are incredibly fortunate to have a family of Ground Hornbills that has been breeding non-stop for the past seven years. We have watched their family grow each year since were opened our doors. Indeed the family has got so big that six of the children now forage on their own and the parents now only have the last two offspring to care for.

In the last eighteen months we have also had a breeding herd of Impala settle on our property and of course the ever present Kudu still roam the property.

Other naturally occurring wildlife includes, Blackback Jackals, Porcupine, Warthogs, Wild Pigs, Mountain Reedbuck, Common Reedbuck, Grey Duiker, Serval, Spotted Gennets, African Wildcats, Lynx and even a very elusive Leopard.

A look back into the past
On a battlefield tour, you will visit places that will evoke a deep sense of history. As your storyteller shares dramatic stories of the battles of Isandlwana, Rorke’s Drift, Blood River or Talana, you will experience the hardship, tragedy, sense of victory and the futility of war. Start the day with breakfast on the Lodge’s deck overlooking the vast plains of Zululand, before departing with your guide. The Rorke’s Drift and Isandlwana tours are one day only, but the Blood river and Talana tours will require an additional day.
