Highly appreciated by many guests is our spacious honeymoon suite with
private patio. All rooms boast spectacular views of the river and the
surrounding coastal countryside.
Activities:
· Whale watching
Whales have become the latest attraction for the national and international
tourist. Stillbay is famous par excellence for the large number of whales,
and in particular the southern right whale and the humpback whale, which
comes into this tranquil bay for a brief nursery visit between mid June
and October.
· Fishing
Stillbay is endowed with rich and diverse angling possibilities and fish
grounds due to the wide expanse of ocean in the Bay of Sleeping Beauty
well as navigable brackish Goukou river for close on 14 kilometers.
The fishing enthusiast can choose between deep-sea, rock, surf and tidal
river angling or just marvelous boat trips up the river. Please ask us,
if you would like to rent the small boat of the Stillbay River Lodge.
In town boats can be hired almost everywhere.
· Surfing
Stillbay and its surrounding is an El Dorado for all kind of watersports.
The rocky Morris Point Cape above the Stillbay habour is a Mekka for advanced
surfers.
On most of the days the waves roll into the bay just the right way and
break perfectly as surfers dream of: in high watertunnels, which slowly
wash out ashore. Sometimes you will see dolphins and seals, which obviously
also find greatest pleasure in surfing the waves.
Even more spectacular is the rough coast of Jongestontain, where only
absolute pro's ride the waves. The ambitious amateurs find themselves
in the softer breakers of Lappiesbaai.
· Biking
Stillbay River Lodge is a perfect starting point for mountain bike tours
across the hilly coastal landscape around Stillbay. In only ten minutes
your are at white sanded Lappiesbaai on the eastside of the rivermouth,
with its softly declining beaches.
From here, you can cycle a country lane into the Pauline Bohnen Nature
Reserve, with its soft hills from which you can enjoy the breathtaking
view down to the seas of Stillbay. With a little luck, you will be able
to observe the water fountains of the whales during the whale season.
· Hiking
Hiking trails offer hikers splendid opportunities to explore the rich
and diverse ecological heritage of the area with enough time for hidden
details of nature. Permits are required and are available at the Tourism
Bureau.
· Golf
Golfing fans already know about the well-kept and pretentious golf courses
in South Africa and especially along the Garden Route. The Stillbay Golf
Course provides superb play for amateur and professional alike on a 9-hole
course, which is being extended to a 18-hole course at the moment.
There are not many golf courses that offer such fantastic views on the
deep blue Indian Ocean while playing. After the game, the comfortable
clubhouse offers the perfect location to discuss the one or other dream
stroke. The golf course is covered with the typical milkwood trees and
lays above Stillbay West on the road to Jongensfontain.
Stillbay or Stilbaai (afrikaans) was first mentioned in a dispatch from
Civil Commissioner B. Osler of Riversdale, dated 14th September 1895 to
the Surveyor General.
This beautiful seaside resort is also known as the Bay of Sleeping
Beauty.
It is one of the most attractive destinations along the fantastic Whale
Coast between Cape Agulhas and the start of the Garden Route.
The town’s way of life is centred around the placid sea and river
estuary which are visible from virtually any vantage point creating a
unique ambience experienced by all who visit Stillbay.
The white sandy beaches are excellent and the absolutely clean ocean and
river waters are perfect for any water sport activity.
History:
Stillbaai River Lodge is one of the oldest buildings of Stillbay
dating back to the late 19th century. For a long time it used to be the
De Brak farmhouse.
After years of decay it was carefully restored by former owners Julian
and Marge Wayne. Later Piet la Grange modernised and extended the homestead
in order to be reopened in 1991 as bed & breakfast guesthouse, which
gained a high reputation being operated by the Irish couple Pat and Ed
Wallis.
Be sure that your hosts Danie and Dahlene Cronje, who are running Stillbay
River Lodge since end of 2009, will do everything they can to meet your
expectations.
At only 50 m downhill from the lodge you will find our "Stables"
Restaurant, which offers typical South African cuisine at fair prices
and is highly frequented by our Stillbay neighbours too.It is the right
place for your dinner if you had an eventful day and prefer to stay near
the hotel.
