Welcome to Bastiaanskloof.
Bastiaanskloof is situated in the historic and picturesque mountain pass of Bainskloof, one and a half hour’s drive from Cape Town.

The property forms part of the Boland Mountain Complex in the Cape Floristic region, one of eight areas in South Africa designated by Unesco as World Heritage sites.


Places as unique and diverse as the wilds of East Africa's Serengeti, the pyramids of Egypt, the Great Wall of China, the Great Barrier Reef in Australia and the Baroque Cathedrals of Latin America make up Unesco's World heritage sites.

Bastiaanskloof boasts access to spectacular mountain hikes and trails and two main perennial rivers, the Witte river and the Bastiaanskloof river. Both of these rivers have beautiful waterfalls and natural pools and are still sparsely populated with indigenous Cape Galaxias, Cape Kurper and Breede River Redfin.

BASTIAANSKLOOF ACCOMMODATION

Guests have a choice of 5 self-catering cottages on the property. Three cottages are situated next to the Bainskloof Pass road and are set in an indigenous landscaped garden , with a small perennial stream and waterfall. A short walk away from the cottages, is the Witte River with its natural pools in which to swim. There are decks for sun tanning in comfort!


The cottages are fully equipped with everything you should need. A Weber barbeque is provided as are towels. Wood is provided for the fireplaces but guests should bring charcoal briquettes and firelighters with them to use in the Weber.


Cottage 1 sleeps 6
There are 3 bedrooms, 1 has a queen size bed, and 2 have 2 single beds in each. There is a family bathroom and 1 of the bedrooms has an en-suite shower room.


Cottage 2 sleeps 4
There are 2 bedrooms. Both bedrooms have queen size beds, single beds can be provided on request and subject to availability. There is one large family bathroom.


Cottage 3 sleeps 4
There are 2 bedrooms, each with a queen size bed and bathroom en-suite. Single beds can be provided on request and subject to availability.


The Kraal cottage and India House, are set in a different part of the property, about 1km away from the above cottages and about 1km in towards the mountains. They are completely private and peaceful and have access to their own magnificent river pool.


Kraal Cottage sleeps 2
There is 1 bedroom, with a queen size bed and shower room. It has access to its own pristine river pool. It has been decorated to a very high standard and is completely private – great for a romantic escape!


India House sleeps 6
There are 3 bedrooms, 2 main bedrooms both with full en-suite bathrooms and outside showers and underfloor heating and a third smaller bedroom with an en-suite shower Room. It has an open plan living area with an oak paneled, state of the art a kitchen, its own swimming pool and access to it’s own river pools. It is our “5 star” luxury self catering accommodation.

We are now offering Bastiaanskloof as a unique venue for functions – be it from small corporate events to weddings for up to 160 people.

Swimming
Swimming in and picnics next to the Witte river natural pools: both on the property (guests have access to 5km of the Witte River, exclusively owned by Bastiaanskloof) as well as the pools higher up the pass at Eerste Tol and Tweede Tol, which are part of the Limietberg Nature Conservancy.

Hiking
Hiking trails – both on the property and on neighbouring Limietberg Nature Conservancy. Please note that permits are required for their hikes. Please contact Cape Nature Conservation or the Wellington Tourist Bureau regarding this prior to your arrival.

Farmers Markets:
Things I love Deli in Church Street, Tulbagh hosts a Farmer’s market on the last Saturday of every month. Tulbagh is a 20 minute drive from Bastiaanskloof.


Birding:
For bird enthusiasts, Bastiaanskloof hosts over 140 species for your viewing pleasure! Several fynbos endemics are found on the property. These include the Cape Rock-jumper, Victorin’s Warbler, Orange Breasted Sunbird, Cape Sugarbird, Protea Seedeater and the Cape Siskin. A full birding report on the bird species on the property has been conducted and is available to guests only.



Arts/Culture in the surrounding towns of Wellington, Tulbagh, Ceres and Worcester.
Experiencing Western Cape fynbos and fauna at its most pristine.

The 2000ha property contains over 800 species of fynbos tree, shrub and plant and a wide range of fauna, including Leopard, Klipspringer, Black Eagles, Angulate Tortoises, African Clawless Otters, Giant Musk Shrews, Spectacled Doormice, Black backed Jackal and Cape Horseshoe bats, amongst others.

DIRECTIONS
From Cape Town via Wellington and Bainskloof pass
Travel out from Cape Town on the N1. Take exit 47, signposted as the Wellington/Klapmuts off ramp (an approximately 45 minute drive).

Turn left at the stop sign, just after taking the off ramp and drive in the direction of Wellington, along the R44. Drive along the R44 all the way until you reach a T-junction (there will be a cemetery on your right), an approximately 20/25 minute drive.

At these traffic lights, turn left into Piet Retief Street (R303). At the next set of traffic lights, (the Dutch Reformed Church will be on your left) turn right into the R301 (Church Street/Kerk Straat) to Bainskloof. Keep on this road all the way over the Bainskloof pass.

You will pass Eerste Tol at the top of the pass and then the road will begin descending. The next landmark will be the Limietberg Nature Conservation camp site (on your left). Driving a bit further you will pass Steenboks Park, also on the left hand side.

Approximately 3km after this you will see 3 cottages on the left hand side of the road, which are the Bastiaanskloof cottages. There is a sign on the gate, "Bastiaanskloof". The journey from Cape Town to the cottages will take you approximately an hour and a half.


Please note if you are staying at the Kraal cottage, please follow the above directions, but after Steenboks Park, it is 2km to the main gate leading to the Kraal cottage on the left hand side of the road. There is a sign saying “Bastiaanskloof”.

Open the main gate with the key provided for the padlock and please make sure you relock the gate as you found it i.e interlinked with the other lock. Follow the dirt track for approximately a kilometre – you will see the kraal cottage on your right – it has a red roof. The Kraal cottage is 1km before the 3 other cottages mentioned above.


From the N2 via Wellington and the Bainskloof pass
Take the N2 North from Cape Town/the airport. Travel for approximately 20 minutes and then take the R44 off ramp next to the Somerset Mall shopping centre on the N2 (Exit 43), follow this road all the way through to Stellenbosch.

Once in Stellenbosch follow the R44 to Wellington via Agter Paarl. Once you pass under the bridge of the N1 highway, drive along the R44 all the way towards Wellington until you reach a T-junction (there will be a cemetery on your right). Via Du Toitskloof Tunnel on the N1
Travel out from Cape Town on the N1. Travel until your reach the Du Toitskloof Toll, for which you will have to pay R21.00 to pass through. Go through the Du Toitskloof Tunnel and drive for approximately 20 minutes towards Worcester. Just before Worcester, on the left hand side, you will see a sign for the R43 to Ceres and on the corner is a Shell garage.

Turn left onto the R43 and travel all the way along (about 10/15 minutes) to the T-junction stop sign. Here you will turn left onto the R301 to Wellington (if you turn right it continues as the R43 to Ceres). Travel over 2 small bridges, past the Calabash Bush Pub on your right and approximately 1km on your right from here are the cottages (you will see the Bastiaanskloof sign on the black gate). The journey should take you an hour and a half.

Please note if you are staying at the Kraal cottage, please follow the above directions, but when you reach the 3 cottages, carry on driving for another 1 km and on your right is a second gate with the sign “Bastiaanskloof”.

Open the main gate with the key provided for the padlock and please make sure you relock the gate as you found it i.e interlinked with the other lock. Follow the dirt track for approximately a kilometre – you will see the kraal cottage on your right – it has a red roof.


From the airport/N2 via Du Toitskloof Tunnel (on the N1)
Drive out of the airport and take the N2 towards Somerset West . The third turn off after the airport is Exit 22A, the R300 towards Belville. Take this turnoff and travel along the R300 for approximately 10/15 minutes until you see signs for the N1 towards Paarl and Worcester.

Take this turn off and travel along the N1 for approximately 30 minutes until you reach the Du Toitskloof Toll, for which you will have to pay R19.00 to pass through. Go through the Du Toitskloof Tunnel and drive for approximately 20 minutes towards Worcester.

Just before Worcester, on the left hand side, you will see a sign for the R43 to Ceres and on the corner is a Shell garage. In summer the highlight of anyone’s visit is to take a dip in the cool, clear water to cleanse, invigorate and relax. The river banks are ideal places for picnics.
