This home, this ‘get-away’, was once filled to the brim with books written in Afrikaans, Dutch, English and German.
Reference books, novels, poetry. With all the books stacked against walls, there was little space to manoeuvre, even to get into the loo.

Aside from ‘the land’, Rykie loved words and loved writing. Having paid R900 for the erf, she built this original house in 1967 for R10,000.
It was built as a beach house, a place to retreat to.
And not just for herself.
Many friends used it as a place of seclusion to write. Some brought their lovers and used it as a hideaway.

This self-contained accommodation has the most beautiful sea views.
It is furnished with a queen-size bed with percale cotton linen and a king-size down duvet.
The unit contains a fully-equipped kitchenette and an outdoor cooking and washing-up area, it has a shower and a separate toilet. For entertaining, there is a patio with tables, chairs, lounger and a Weber braai/barbecue.

Directions to Rykie's Retreat
1. Travel along the N1 highway from Cape Town towards Paarl
2. Turn left onto the N7 (towards Malmesbury)
3. Turn left at the Melkbosstrand turn-off (M19)
4. Travel approximately 9 kms to the traffic lights and turn right onto the R27
5. Travel along the West Coast Road (R27) until you come to the Yzerfontein/Darling turn-off (there are flashing orange warning lights just before the intersection) - turn left (R315 towards the sea)
6. Travel 8,0kms
7. At the four-way stop, keep going straight. The road winds, and the sea will be on your right.
8. You'll travel through one stop sign, and one yield sign
9. Just after the yield sign you'll need to turn right at the T-junction, into Lutie Katz Road. Villa Fontana flats will be in front of you at the T-junction.
10. Travel approximately 75m to 4 Lutie Katz Road on the right (you'll see a small shopping centre on your left). You've reached Rykie's Retreat - ±60 minutes from Cape Town central and 75 minutes from Cape Town International Airport.
