A national monument built in 1864, Ann’s Villa is one of the oldest country coaching inns in the Eastern Cape. Situated at the foot of the Zuurberg Pass, it has been a popular stopover point since the diamond rush of 1869 and remains an attraction for visitors interested in history and authentic colonial architecture. The combination of 19th century South Africa and romantic peace
and quiet make for an unforgettable and unique experience. |

Accommodation at Ann’s Villa
Ann’s Villa is self-catering i.e. bring your own food and drinks. All else is supplied and the kitchen is fully equipped including a barbecue. The Villa accommodates 11 people in 4 double and 3 single rooms. The villa is for the exclusive use of guests and the experience of staying there is that of staying in one’s own large historical country home.
Attractions and Activities
A personalised tour of the registered 1855 Blacksmith Museum, the most complete in South Africa with virtually all of its original equipment, is included in the price, as is a tour of the original 1864 general dealers shop. A fully researched detailed history is available for sale in the shop.
In the evening play snooker or family board games in the games room. Ramble through 1000 acres in a hotspot of biodiversity (the Zuurberg has five floral kingdoms, the most diverse within one geographic area in South Africa) and enjoy the 200 recorded bird species.
A chance meeting with small mammals or a kudu is quite possible. Visit the historic graveyard and spot the spelling mistakes.
Ann’s Villa is 120km from Port Elizabeth. It is central to the game reserves of Addo Elephant Park Shamwari, Kwantu and Kwandwe. All are about 45 minutes drives. In the Krom Valley, 18 km’s away from the Villa is Walking with Elephants.
The historic towns of Somerset East and Grahamstown are about an hour’s drive. Ann’s Villa is a centrally situated destination for those looking for more than a simple overnight stop and who want to experience a place that is memorable, unique and absorbing.
