Savanna Lodge Facilities
Savanna lies in an area where 'Big 5' sightings are so frequent, it is
not unusual to see lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino in a single
game drive. Specially designed game viewing vehicles and highly trained
guides with vast knowledge of the African bushveld, take guests on close
and intimate encounters with a large variety of wildlife. Numerous nearby
dams and a series of waterholes in front of the lodge attract many species,
especially in the dry winter months when elephants are daily visitors.
A close-knit team of friendly staff provides personalised service with
each guest regarded as a valued friend. From the moment they arrive guests
feel part of the Savanna 'family'.
Nine magnificent suites offer spacious and luxurious accommodation. Seven
of the suites have tented roofs, blending the elegance of a by-gone colonial
era with all the convenience of modern facilities.
Relaxing in the comfort of the public lounge with its spacious
patio, or at the main pool looking out over lush gardens and floodlit
waterhole, guests are frequently treated to fantastic views of birds and
game drinking and bathing, A barman is constantly in attendance to ensure
the humans' thirst is just as adequately taken care of.
A viewing loft above the lounge makes a pleasant nook for a quiet game
of chess as well as a bird's eye view of the waterhole, while an adjoining
library provides wireless broadband internet access and offers guests
the means to transfer digital photographs, freshly captured on their safari,
onto CD or DVD.
Relaxation between game drives is important and what better way to unwind
than with an invigorating massage. Savanna's own qualified therapist offers
guests a range of treatments in the privacy of their suites. And, if a
little retail therapy is called for, a visit to the curio and gift shop
should do the trick.
Savanna offers excursions to nearby places of interest and scenic beauty
including the spectacular Panorama route and an African village.
Here guests visit the school and a traditional healer or medicine man
and learn about Shangaan culture and food. On a visit to an elephant sanctuary
guests feed and ride the gentle giants. Golf can be arranged
at Skukuza or the magnificent Leopard Creek course. These activities,
with the exception of golf at Leopard Creek, take place between game drives
so no meals or drives are missed.
Savanna offers the opportunity of being married in the most romantic of
all settings, with the vast African bush as a backdrop. You can select
any of the following venues for your wedding:
- In a clearing in the bush
- At the swimming pool with a view of the waterhole in the background
- On the deck in the lounge area
Children of all ages are welcome with their families
when booking the Savanna Suite, however no children under the age of 8
years will be permitted at the main lodge.
Each day there are two game drives, early morning and late afternoon.
These game drives are broken up with a drink and snack break. During the
middle of the day, there are various activities for the children.
A children’s menu is available on request with all the foods that
bushbabies enjoy, if your child has any special needs, please be sure
to advise us in advance.
Each child receives a goodie bush bag with items to add to their safari
experience. All items collected from the activities during your child’s
stay will be put together in a scrapbook, showing all the items they learned
about and have collected.
As the children enjoy different activities and are of varying ages, a
daily programme will be put together according to their interests. The
various activities included during your child’s stay are:
In the bush:
· Spoor identification: Tracking of small animals with your tracker
and guide: find our Small 5. This concentrates on teaching children the
different spoor and droppings of animals as well as tracking techniques.
Children can be taught how to follow animals and look for distinguishing
signs.
- Plant uses: Plant identification as well as the medicinal
and practical uses of these plants. Children can collect different plants
during their walk and discover what can be used as substitutes for toothbrushes,
toilet paper etc.
- Bird watching: Identify the different species of birds.
The field guide will explain how to do this from various visual aspects,
as well as from bird calls.
- Butterfly and bug catching: Find the smaller creatures
such as butterflies, lizards, etc.
· Picnics in the bush: Enjoy a picnic lunch where you can investigate
the nearby surroundings and collect goodies for your scrap book.
- Village Tour: One of our trackers will take the family
on a village tour, which includes seeing the nursery school, seeing the
traditional homes and learning how they make their food. There are also
traditional dancers. An additional option is a visit to the Lilydale Primary
School.
- Traditional hair braiding: Have your hair braided traditionally
by one of the Tsonga ladies.
- Arts and crafts: Spend some time with a local African
crafter.
- Kitchen activities: Make and bake in the kitchen.

animal.
