Dumfries hotelThe Stairmand family look forward to welcoming you to their farmhouse at The Barr. Why not unwind with tea or coffee and some delicious farmhouse home baking on arrival? Guests can relax in luxury in their own part of the house, as we are at the other end – and in the colder months rest in comfort in front of a log burning stove in their own guest lounge.

Barr Farmhouse is peacefully situated on one side of the natural bowl that surrounds Dumfries with breath-taking views to the hills on the far side of the valley. An attractive, traditional farmhouse, full of character dating back to the early 1800s, it was completely refurbished in 2005 to a high standard.

Not only does it have easy access to the main motorways, and acts as a natural gateway to Edinburgh, Glasgow and the Highlands of Scotland, the English Lakes and Ireland, it is an area of outstanding beauty where there is much to do for the visitor.

Each bedroom has its own private bathroom or shower room and with a separate entrance at one end of the property, guests may enjoy the independence of coming and going as they wish. In the mornings you may indulge in a traditional full Scottish breakfast or select something from our alternative menu.

They are Dog people and welcome your dogs. They are also close to the 7 stanes Mountain bikes track at Ae Forest (7 minutes ), Mabie Forest(20 minutes) and Dalbeattie(30 minutes). Wash down facilities and storage for Mountain Bikes are available here at The Barr.

Barr Farmhouse Accommodation

DINNING ROOM
Afternoon tea is served in the drawing room or dining room when you arrive as part of your package (any time after 3.30pm). Relax and unwind after a hard day traveling with a nice cup of tea or coffee and some delicious farmhouse home baking. Occasionally, when the weather is fair, afternoon tea can be served in the garden where you can enjoy the views from The Barr. Breakfast is served in the vaulted dining room between 7.30am and 9.00am at a time of your choosing when you may indulge in a traditional Scottish full breakfast with all the trimmings or choose an alternative breakfast from their menu.
DRAWING ROOM
A guest drawing room is available to you during your stay after 3.30pm where there are books to read, card and board games to play, CDs to listen to, SKY television to watch and a small library of DVDs for your use. After dinner you may relax in the comfort of your own lounging area and in the colder months in front of a roaring log burning stove. They are Wi-Fi enabled so that Internet connection is available throughout the guest house accommodation and in all the bedrooms at no extra cost. In order to preserve peace and quiet it is our preference not to have televisions in the bedrooms (SKY TV is available in your drawing room). Radios are provided. .
BEDROOM
Each of our bedrooms boasts an individual contemporary country style in both decor and furniture, with stunning views across the Galloway hills and Criffel beyond. All have central heating and tea and coffee making facilities. Guest accommodation is at one end of the property with its own private entrance and they live at the other end, so it feels like you are in your own country home! Each bedroom has its own private facilities, either as a shower room or bathroom. They have chosen not to have televisions in the bedrooms (there is one in your drawing room). Radios are provided.
GARDENS
You are most welcome to take a walk around the ‘Wee Paddock’ to admire the magnificent views. Weather permitting, please feel free to stroll along our ‘Criffel Path’ to view Criffel in the distance, in all its majesty (the highest hill in the south-west of Scotland) and all the other hills on the other side of the valley. Alternatively, why not take a seat in the ‘Snowdrop Glade’, carpeted with snowdrops in the spring.
The big challenge now is to create gardens where previously there was nothing. The neighbouring barley field reached almost to the house! In 2008/9 more than 700 tonnes of soil were removed to create a gentle slope at the back of the house exposing the views for all to see from the drawing room. Garden landscaping will continue during 2011 and new dry stane dykes will be built at the top of the lane
