Welcome to Dumfries ScotlandThe charming old country town of Dumfries, also known as ‘Queen of the South’ is the largest town in south-west Scotland near the border with England and is a former major seaport (being sited on the River Nith). Dumfries has a long and often bloody history dating back before its chartering as a royal burgh in the 12th century. Robert the Bruce began his rebellion against the Edward I and the English at Dumfries by capturing the castle in 1306, leading to the Wars of Independence. Dumfries is most famed for its connection with Scotland's national bard Robert Burns. The bard lived in Dumfries in his later years before his death in 1796 and his house (now a museum) still contains personal possessions. Dumfries has a number of sites associated with Robert Burns including his favourite 'howff' or drinking haunt, the Globe Inn. The Robert Burns Centre recalls his years in Dumfries and his mausoleum is in St. Michael’s churchyard. Other points of interest in Dumfries include Mid Steeple in the centre of Dumfries which was built in 1707 as a courthouse and prison and a converted 18th century Windmill contains camera obscura and local history museum. The Devorgilla Bridge is the oldest of five bridges across the River Nith and dates back to the 15th century. Lady Devorgilla was matriarch of the powerful Balliol family and a great benefactress to the town of Dumfries. The famous Sweetheart Abbey, five miles south of the town of Dumfries was founded in 1273 to honour her late husband. Over the centuries, Dumfries was repeatedly visited by marauding English armies, the Covenanters, witchhunters and the Jacobite army. Nevertheless, it continued to prosper as a market town and has been the home of several famous people, including J.M. Barrie, author of 'Peter Pan' and of course, the aforementioned Scottish bard Robert Burns.
