Portuguese Island This uninhabited island of only 2,5
square kilometres is a protected reserve and home to countless birds,
crabs, and wide unspoiled beaches. Hidden lagoons and mangrove trees add
to the magic of this beautiful and wonderful place. Portuguese Island
has recently become a centre of worldwide interest, as it is also home
to one of the last remaining herds of Dugongs; a rare and endangered marine
mammal.
Luderitz This hazy coastal town has immense appeal for
its barren beauty and solitude. Many charming and fine buildings reveal
its colonial history as the first German settlement in South West Africa.
Goerke House is the most impressive and sits with a fine view, on top
of Diamond Hill. The best view of the town and working harbour is from
the peninsula of land that juts out and helps to form one of the best
natural harbours along the Namibian Coast. To the south of Luderitz is
Diaz Point, where a big stone cross commemorates the discovery of the
area. You might see Jackass Penguins and seals in the cold Benguela current.
Walvis Bay The largest and busiest port in Namibia, Walvis
Bay has unique landscape and unspoilt beauty where the mighty dunes of
the Namib meet the rich waters of the Atlantic Ocean. The lagoon is the
largest single area of shallow sheltered water on the west coast of Southern

Kolmanskop (Optional excursion from Luderitz) In 1908
at Grasplatz station in the middle of the rock strewn desert between Aus
and Luderitz, the railway line inspector keeping sand off the track picked
up a stone that turned out to be the first diamond in the region. Kolmanskop
on the outskirts of Luderitz became a diamond boomtown with a casino,
skittle alley and a theatre of acoustic renown. However, the town had
severe water problems and a constant sandblasting wind. So in 1926 , when
larger diamonds and a richer field were found further south at the mouth
of the Orange River, Kolmanskop began a slow decline to its current deserted
ghostly status.
Swakopmund (Optional excursion from Walvis Bay) Swakopmund
is a place of singular charm, and resembles a small Bavarian village,
nestling between the desert and sea. It has a restful and relaxing atmosphere
with promenades, palm trees and beautifully tended public gardens. The
particular attraction of the town lies in the fact that one can enjoy
the wild beauty of the desert and sea and yet be within easy reach of
the solid comfort of Swakopmund’s hotels, pensions and restaurants.
The source of Swakopmund’s continental atmosphere is the graceful
art nouveau building. Eleven of these charming old buildings are nation
monuments. The graceful lighthouse is just one of the many characteristic
old structures which gives this town its particular charm.

ships. Letters are still posted there today in a seaman’s boot!
Mossel Bay is a sportsmen’s and watersport enthusiasts paradise.

Green in South Africa, Prince Alfred’s Guard Memorial and the 1992
Victorian Pearson Conservatory.
