Pomene Mozambique
Pomene Beach Lodges & Resorts
Pomene can be described in one sentence as “The perfect
remote family and honeymoon getaway providing something for the
entire family plus world class diving to top it off”. That’s
one very long sentence so let’s break it up.
Pomene is a thin strip peninsula that stretches out about midway
between Vilanculos and Maxixe. Once you turn off the main road you
have a 3 hour drive on a loose sandy road. You drive and drive and
then suddenly paradise peaks its head out from behind the dune.
The area of Pomene does not have a town. It is just a peninsula
with two resorts on it. Pomene Bay Lodge lies on the ocean’s
side and Pomene View lies on the estuary’s side.
It is best you shop at Maxixe, Inhambane or Vilanculos before making
your way to Pomene. The closest thing to a shop is a rural Mozambican
market on your way to Pomene. You can buy the very basics here like
fresh vegetables, bread or maybe a live chicken. The nearest fuel
stop is at Massinga. In either direction, once you meet the main
road, you have about another hour to a fuel pump.

The road to Pomene is a tough one. Tough, but worth it. Both
the tar and sand road calls for slow traveling. The tar road has
many potholes and the sandy road is plain dune sand. If you are
a 4x4 enthusiast then this is the road for you. You can expect a
travel time of 3 hours on the sand road that takes you from the
main road to Pomene.
Air travel is available and makes for a very scenic flight over
the peninsula and surrounding. Flights take place regularly from
Vilanculos. The roads around Pomene can under no circumstances be
driven by a 2x4 vehicle.

Pomene is a beautiful peninsula with the Indian Ocean lapping at its
front doorstep and crystal clear waters of a spectacular mangrove estuary
lapping on the other. Access is by 4x4 vehicle or private charter plane.
Each resort has its own restaurant.
If you are not self catering then your resort restaurant will be your only
food option. There are some locals walking around selling fresh bread and
fish. This might not be everyday though so go prepared. If you left something
behind you have long 3 hour drive to the nearest market. Self drive tourists,
especially South African, will bring their food supplies and maybe enjoying
the restaurant once a day.
