Welcome to Watson Lake
Watson Lake is home to the famous Sign Post Forest, the incredible
Northern Lights Space and Science Centre and the gateway to the
exciting history and breathtaking scenery of Yukon.
In 1942 a homesick U.S. Army G.I. working on the Alaska Highway,
put up a sign with the name of his home town and the distance, others
followed suit and the tradition continues to this day, and that
is how The Signpost Forest started.
The Sign Post Forest currently has over 72,000 signs… and
counting! The Town of Watson Lake owes its existence to two major
factors: the construction of a military airport in 1941 and the
construction of the Alaska Highway in 1942.
Today, the Town of Watson Lake is the key transportation, communication
and distribution center for mining and logging activities in the
southern Yukon.
The Visitors Center provides a look at the fascinating history
surrounding the building of the Alaska Highway.
The Center also has displays of the Northern Lights.
