Scenic Drives You'll find the Wind Energy Interpretive Centre, The College of Piping, and houses made of glass bottles. The Central Coastal Drive includes fun-filled Cavendish, and much more. Enjoy spectacular views along Route 20, classic fishing ports and lobster suppers, shopping at Gateway Village, and a leisurely stroll around quaint Victoria-by-the-Sea. Points East Coastal Drive features the unforgettable dune system at Greenwich in PEI National Park and the bayside community of St. Peters, as well as stunning beaches, lively ceilidhs, and the meeting of the tides at East Point. Watch for eagles and seals, and try not to miss scenic Montague, rustic Orwell Corner, and the historic Railway Museum in Elmira. Lightthouses The first mode of transportation for early settlers was the sea. Lighthouses were as important to them in their trade and commerce, particularly in shipbuilding, as the railway was after Confederation. Many colonial or "first-generation" lighthouses – those built before 1873 – are octagonal shaped, and were constructed when timber was abundant in this province. List of attractions at lighthouses: The "second- generation" lighthouses, those built after 1873, are square tapered. Some of the largest timber had to be imported from New Brunswick as the Island timber supply had been depleted by the shipbuilding industry. Each lighthouse had its individual day markings and distinguishing flash patterns. Beaches Whether you prefer napping in the sun, splashing in the water, building a sandcastle, enjoying a leisurely stroll, or capturing that unforgettable sunset, there's a beach that's perfect for it. This Island is filled with many wonders–scenic beauty, cultural richness, diverse history, and a welcoming spirit. Wrapped around it all are those beaches. They are the boundary of Prince Edward Island, and what separates us from the rest of the world. Amusement quotient: Sand castles (unlimited shapes and sizes minimal tools required). Digging a hole to China (unlimited also clam shell will do the trick). Jumping waves (also a game without end). As a base for volleyball court (softer than the gym floor).
